You all went crazy for this last summer, and there's no guessing why. This is an impressive drop from one of Australia's best and most loved wineries. The Gold Label Shiraz release from Barossa usually retails for £19.99, but for this month, and exclusively at Oddbins.com you can buy one and get a second one free - that's only £10 a bottle for superpremium Aussie Shiraz. The Gold Label wines are Wolf Blass' experimental range, designed to exploit the possibilities of different combinations of regions and grape varieties, resulting in some truly groundbreaking wines. The Barossa valley is Shiraz paradise which, coupled with winemaker Caroline Dunn's ultracareful techniques has worked wonders in this wine. It has a silky palate packed with brambly flavours, blueberries and smoked spice. With all the power, concentration and complexity sealed under stelvin, it will be guaranteed 100% cork taint-free. Click here to grab your pair, but as with all good things, availability is limited and demand will be high, so get your order in now.
As summer approaches, we're stepping up our Champagne deals and offering you 30% off 6 bottles on a selected range. These include two 'everyday' nonvintage Champagnes in Heidsieck Héritage Brut and Jacquart Brut Mosaïque - these are fresh and crisp, and make great toasting or aperitif fizz. Then if you fancy something a bit fuller and more food friendly, there is Charles Lafitte's Blanc de Noirs, and a vintage rosé from Jacquart. Finally, for that extra bit of ostentation, we have a pair of vintages - Heidsieck & Co. 'Gold Top', and a new listing from a house that produces a favourite NV of ours, de Venoge. With all of these, you can get 20% off if you buy just one bottle, or 25% off if you buy three. So click here to buy some bargain bubbly!
With the film Sideways winning plaudits and awards on both sides of the Atlantic, this is your chance to see what Miles was raving about, when it comes to Californian Pinot Noir. From San Luis Obispo, this wine is easy to drink, fresh and fruity, with hints of cherries, raspberries and spice. Good value at £9.99, but down to £7.99 for one bottle, or £7.49 when you buy three, this is a seriously underpriced wine. Click here to pick up some cut-price Pinot now. However, it doesn't end there, click here to see all of our Avila wines which include a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah, that are on the same deal i.e. 20% off one or 25% off three. Why not mix and match?

Oddbins "Oddbins remains at the cutting edge of wine retail, sticking
firmly to its philosophy of making wine fun and accessible to non-experts."
(The Daily Telegraph, IWC supplement, 15th September 2001)
You don't need to be an expert to enjoy wine, you can get involved as
much or as little as you like. However, understanding the basics will
boost your confidence and enhance your pleasure. Oddbins recognises that
for newcomers learning the ropes can be confusing or even embarrassing
when it should be exciting!
To help we have answered some common questions and created two starter
kits. If you require any further information, help or advice contact
them.
Get to grapes with it
Definition Wine is nothing more than the juice of fermented grapes.
Simple!
Red & white All grape juice is white. The colour and consistency
of red wine (and rosé) results from the skins and stalks being
pressed along with the flesh or 'pulp' of the grapes.
Origin Although generalisations are fraught with danger, Old World
wine from vine growing veterans; France, Germany, Italy and Spain is known
for its elegance and refinement. New World wine, from relatively recent
entrants like Australia and Chile is characterised by full-on, fruity
styles produced using modern technology.
Price Generally, if you spend more you will experience greater depth
and complexity of flavour and a longer finish; overall, a more interesting
drink. Price is also dependent on reputation and where in the world production
takes place.
Flavour The flavour of wine is influenced by a number of factors
including: the grape variety, the climate, the soil type, maturity, use
of oak casks and the skill of the winemaker.
Grapes Many different varieties of grapes are used to make wine,
either singularly or as a blend. Each variety has unique taste and cultivation
requirements.
Maturity Ageing in cask or in bottle can add subtlety and complexity
to the flavour of wine. Not all wine requires ageing; many, particularly
inexpensive wines, are ready to drink straight away.
Vintage A wine vintage merely relates to the year the grapes were
harvested, it does not necessarily denote superiority. The quality of
a vintage, which is important for fine wine, is chiefly determined by
the weather and therefore the harvest.
Tasting There is no right or wrong answer as to what a wine tastes
like, as you will find if you involve some friends. Fundamentally, it's
just a case of closing your eyes and thinking about what it reminds you
of.
Food and wine White wine for white meat, red wine for red meat is
not a bad guide, but that shouldn't stop you experimenting. Always consider
not just the main component of the dish but also the sauces or accompaniments
that are being served. For example roast turkey served with rich stuffing
will require an adaptable wine to balance out the meal, a light red would
be ideal.
Your preferences Fortunately, the only way to find out what appeals
to you is to experiment! Our tasting kits have been put together to emphasise
the differences between styles and comes complete with recommendations
for you to follow up with.
